Recovering the Dissenters’ Legacy at the Birthplace of Feminism
New Unity, a non-religious Unitarian church in Hackney, has received a Round One pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund for a major project to improve the condition of its historic building on Newington Green and establish a programme of events and activities for adults, families, and schools, opening up the building to a wider audience.
Founded in 1708, it is one one of England’s oldest Unitarian churches and has had strong ties to radical social reform for over 300 years. New Unity is rooted in the spirit of dissent, activism, freedom and equality. From July 2017 to March 2018 we will be running some pilot events to find out how people would like to engage with the building and the stories associated with it; hosting a range of events from music or comedy evening to talks and lectures.
Many of these will be exploring some of the fascinating stories of figures associated with the building such as Mary Wollstonecraft the ‘Mother’ of contemporary feminism, the minister Richard Price an intellectual radical who advocated for civil rights and Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the USA.
