About New Unity‎ > ‎

Lay Leadership

Committees: Who, what, why, etc.

The lay leadership of our community comprises two Committees, one each at Unity and Newington Green Unitarian Church. The Committees meet jointly every month. Committee members are elected by the community at the annual general meeting (AGM) of each congregation.

The members of the Newington Green committee for 2011-2012 are: Annette Percy, Julia Snell, Meredith Moss, and  Britt Doughty-Godchaux
The members of the Unity committee this year are: John Bates, Leigh, Caitlin and Amy Burns. Rev. Andy is an ex officio member of both committees by virtue of being our minister.

Annual General Meetings

These are held every year in the spring. There are separate AGMs for Newington Green and Unity. The newsletter will always include a formal notice outlining the AGMs dates. These dates are also notified at services in advance.

The main activity at the AGMs is to receive reports from the chair, treasurer and secretary of each committee, and to approve the accounts of each church. The AGMs can also be used to debate motions from members; these motions must be submitted in advance to give time for them to be included in the prior notices of the AGM's that are distributed to all members in advance.

Would you like to be a member of the Newington Green or Unity Committee for 2012–13? At the AGMs we elect two new committees, one for Newington Green and one for Unity, and anyone who is a member of either church is entitled to stand for election.

If you are interested in helping with the governance structure of your church then consider standing for election to one of the committees. Feel free to talk with any of the current committee members, or you can attend and observe a joint committee meeting before making up your mind. We are always pleased to see new faces on the committees -- you do not need to be a long-standing member to take on this role.

If you wish to stand for election as a committee member you need to complete the relevant nomination form ensuring two members sign it in support. Forms must be submitted ten days before the relevant AGM. Nomination forms are available to download below.

Policies

The joint committee for our two churches has decided to create a web page detailing its agreed policies. Policies will be discussed by the committee and added to the page over time. Click here for further details.
