Ethos/Unitarianism

Unitarians are people who take religion liberally. We respect that many paths lead toward wholeness, that there are many ways of expressing what we hold to be of greatest worth and many differences among people which should be celebrated as part of one great diverse whole.

In this congregation you are encouraged to think for yourself and to explore your own spirituality. Freedom of thought, rational integrity and tolerance of differences are not just worthy goals, but are means of arriving at our goals. We hold that the truth is best served where the mind is free and we trust that through open hearts and minds we will all grow toward the sacred.

Within the congregation you will find people who describe themselves as Christians, Muslims, Earth-Spirit Worshippers, Buddhists, Jews, Humanists, Agnostics and Atheists. You will also find many who prefer to have no label but 'Unitarian' - a name that signifies an openness to all sources of wisdom. While each individual takes responsibility for their own spiritual journey, we unite to celebrate that great mystery that transcends all traditions, all categories and all words.

Unitarianism is not a religion that is purely focused on the transcendent. The presence of divinity in the world around us and in each and every human person is central to our life as a community and inspires us to care for the earth and all its creatures more lovingly.

Honouring the mystery, respecting the sacredness of creation, upholding the inherent worth of every person and searching for depth and meaning in a free environment is what this congregation is all about. We don’t take ourselves too seriously; humour is never far from the surface. If you wish to join your search to ours in a spirit of freedom, reason, tolerance and love you will be made most welcome.
