Culture: Living in the Salad Bowl

  • New Unity @New Unity 39A Newington Green London, England, N16 9PR United Kingdom (map)

Creating an intercultural culture.

What happens when we welcome different cultures to come together? There are many different ways of thinking about it, symbolised by stews, salad bowls, melting pots, and mosaics.

What shape should a community that is intentionally and radically inclusive take? Should it melt difference down to homogeneity? Should it preserve all the separate elements as they are?

Ultimately, unless there is a requirement for conformity, we need the skills of understanding across cultures. We need to have an overarching culture that involves ways of being and talking and doing that build relationship by recognising, accepting, and celebrating our cultural differences.

And what do we all need to do to get to that desired way of being. What must happen in our actions and in our hearts?
