Meditation

  • New Unity @Mary Wollstonecraft Room 39A Newington Green London, England, N16 9PR United Kingdom (map)

The Tuesday meditation meeting is a weekly meeting of people meditating together. We find this experience fulfilling, supportive and reaffirming. Many find this enhances their practice outside.

We meet in the Unitarian church*, a free thinking spiritual community since 1673 in Newington Green. When people come to our meditation meetings they have diverse motivations, practices and rationales. All are acceptable. We avoid imposing rules. As a free thinking community of radical dissenters we respect the right of individuals to seek truth as they see it.

Doors open at 7pm every Tuesday. Mobile phones are turned off and people settle down. At 7:15 a 20 minute meditation starts, then there is a short silent 5 minute break followed by another 20 minute meditation.

Discussion starts at 8pm. First we go round the room and everyone gives their name and says as much or as little about the meditation as they want. This without interruption, afterwards there is interactive discussion. We ask people to discuss their experience arising from meditation and we discourage fanciful talk about or around meditation. Certainly we discourage seeking agreement or imposing views on others. On the first Tuesday of the month, one of us, or a guest gives a presentation on some aspect of meditation.

Meditation does lead to changes in our behaviour (our precepts about speech arose in this way). We try not impose to doctrines or dogmas about meditation. Instead we try to support your meditation.
