2010 Sermons

'The Miracles We Recognize' 12 December 2010. Hanukkah celebrates a rather minor biblical miracle. The events that we choose to see as wondrous and miraculous determine how we feel about and interact with our lives. Miracles abound if we look for them!

'Insights from Foreign Places' 21 November 2010. We are inclined to look to a variety of religious and secular traditions for insight. Taoism, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are high on our list. In this sermon, we look to a religion we tend to ignore and even dismiss and find that we have a lot to learn from the Rastafarian movement.

'Diwali' 7 November 2010. One of the meanings of this important Hindu celebration is a recognition and cultivation of the sacred light within all people. Using Diwali as a jumping off point, we explore the notion of the sacred within and consider how we can each nurture that inner holiness - to let our lights shine.

'Masks and Demons' 31 October 2010. Halloween is a time to put on costumes and masks and pretend we are something we are not. What happens when this is something we do the rest of the time? Becoming ourselves...

'Reformation' 24 October 2010. Life often calls upon us to unravel and undo ways that are comfortable for our systems or for ourselves personally. A spiritual view on re-formation as a part of societal and personal growth.

'Barriers to Love' 17 October 2010. Love is available to us. It is the barriers we create and maintain that prevent us from finding the love that heals and saves us and our world. What walls do you use to keep love out?

'Navaratri'
10 October 2010. The nine-day Hindu celebration of the divine feminine prompts thinking about the use of gender in images of the divine and - in light of some troubling comments from right-wing Christians - what indeed is strength. Being strong and defeating evil does not require warriors - we need to have strengths like compassion and love.

'Harvest 2010'
3 October 2010. Harvest is a time to remember gratitude - an essential quality for the meaningful, satisfying life - and a quality that we have increasingly lost due to the speed and materialistic ethos of our lives. Cultivating gratitude is cultivating happiness and peace.

'Lost and Found'
26 September 2010. We wander away. We become lost - or do we? If are found, who does the finding?

'Zap and Zest'
19 September 2010. Two very different ways of being religious - Zap and Zest. Which is more true to our observations and what does that mean about hope, possibility, and how to live a 'whole' life?

'Peace'
18 September 2010. Marking the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we consider what peace requires and what we can do about it.

'Another Beginning' 4 September 2010. Marking the celebration of Rosh Hashanah and Eid ul Fitr over the coming week and the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, we consider our ability to make amends and to give and receive forgiveness. VIDEO available.

'Do you know the truth?' 29 August 2010. The truth will make you free", or so we are told. What truth is that? Is there one truth or many? In this sermon, we wrestle with the question of truth - what it meant and what it might mean for us today.

'Take flight'
15 August 2010. Finding the strength for greatness is a part of our search. How does it come about and what holds us back?

'Where are you going?'
8 August 2010. It is easy to travel through life on a kind of 'automatic pilot', but it prevents us from getting where we want to go and being the people we want to be. With the approach of the month of Ramadan - a time designed as period for deepening spiritual practice and focus - we look at ways that we might use this 30 days to become more deliberate and mindful of our own spiritual journey.

'First fruits'
1 August 2010. At Lammas, the time of the first harvest, we consider the joy and gratitude of receiving the first fruits of the earth's abundance. This is tempered by uncertainty about the future. How can we be generous and daring in the face of uncertainty? How can we have a faith in the abundance of the universe in which we live that lets us also live abundantly and generously?

'For those who suffer'
25 July 2010. The truth is that we all suffer. It is a part of the human condition and always will be. How can we bear our suffering? Better yet, how can we use it to make a better life?

'The journey toward love'
18 July 2010. We all know that love is the answer, but the challenge is how to get there. An exploration of the meaning of love and its relationship to acceptance.

'Who are you?' 11 July 2010. Questions of who we really are and how identity relates to spiritual growth are the constant object of much of religious teaching. Who are we really? Does it matter? And how do we think about the 'self' as we seek to grow into greater spiritual wholeness?

'Action'
13 June 2010. Dialogue is good, but eventually our visions and dreams are worthless if we do not live them - if we do not risk taking action.

'Living without shame' 6 June 2010. We explore the place that guilt and shame play in our lives, for better or for worse

'Gratitude'
30 May 2010. For Gratitude Sunday, when we make a special time to recognize all of the many voluntary contributions to the New-Unity community over the past year, we consider the importance of gratitude in a happy, centred life. We also recognize the challenges of being grateful and consider how we can assist one another in the growth of gratitude.

'Windows of the spirit' 23 May 2010. Our inability to be present and aware to the wonders and sacredness of the world blocks our spiritual growth. How can we clean our windows and how can we help one another?

'IDAHO - Let us grow' 16 May 2010. An exploration of the bias and persecution of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in commemoration of International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO).

'Finding Freedom' 2 May 2010. With May Day/International Workers' Day bringing together freedom from the dark wintry half of the year and freedom from oppressive work conditions, we consider what freedom means for both the privileged and the underprivileged peoples of today's very divided world.

'Helping hearts and hands' 25 April 2010. Being a radically inclusive community means that we lack the set answers present in most religious groups. Our faith calls upon us to create communities where each of us can be safe and supported in finding our own way toward wholeness. A special quality of presence and acceptance is key to building such an environment.

'The water in which we swim' 18 April 2010. In commemoration of Earth Day 2010, we consider the causes of our deteriorating environmental health. Change requires more than fiddling about at the edges, it requires a new way of thinking of and understanding the world and our place in it.

'Who is human?' 11 April 2010: Holocaust Remembrance Day/Yom HaShoah. Human beings have been seen at their worst in the massacres of innocents throughout history. Dehumanization is a necessary prerequisite to the ruthlessness that followed. Where was human goodness in the Holocaust? How can we be deliberate about rehumanizing those among us who have been objectified?

'Practice Resurrection' 4 April 2010: For Easter, we consider what resurrection and rebirth may mean for each of us as we each go through the growing and declining parts of our own lives. Can we be the agents of resurrection as we offer strength and life to one another?

'Reflections on a bicycle lost'
28 March 2010: Consideration of retributive and restorative justice and what our faith tells us about perspectives on relating to victims and perpetrators of crime.

'Hidden Beauty' 21 March 2010: Learning from the way unsighted people view beauty, we consider what we see and what we miss in the world around.

'What do we say?' 14th March 2010: This service was an opportunity to explore and share how we might describe Unitarianism. The sermon introduced the subject and the congregation shared their own ideas.

'It's complicated' 7th March 2010: Human relationship reveals the sacred element of life, offers us the opportunity for growth, and brings meaning and joy to our lives. Sometimes though, we find it easier to engage at arm's length. How can we make our closer relationships more meaningful and less disappointing. The answer has to do with having the faith to give with no notion of reward.

'Who is Evil?' 28th February 2010: On Purim, with that biblical story of good vs. evil in mind, we look at the nature of evil in our modern world and how we, as liberal religionists, might best engage with the concept of evil.

'The Power of Community' 21st February 2010: A healthy community - with its mixture of support and challenge - can bring out the best in us and help us journey toward wholeness.

'The Purpose of Life Revealed' 7th February 2010: Why are we here? As long as we are here, what is the purpose of living?

'Gathering Strength' 24 January 2010: How do we grow stronger? Rev. Andy offers three lessons stolen from the trainers at the gym for building some spiritual muscle power.

'Injustice Anywhere...' 17 January 2010: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said that "injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." The problems of this world can seem overwhelming, and yet we must be strong enough not to become overwhelmed and hopeless or apathetic. The enormity of the current catastrophe in Haiti tests our ability to stay with the needs of those who suffer and to recognize how very far we need to go.

'Nurturing Growth' 10 January 2010: Why a liberal spiritual community should grow in size. It is not about us, but a way of ministering to people in need of a spiritual home and of making a better world.

'A New Day' 3 January 2010: The advent of a new year brings thoughts to our minds of the potential for change - in our lives and in our world. Change is possible if we will have the courage to seize it.
