Schedule of servicesWorship services take place Sundays, 11.00 AM at one of our two locations 2nd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of each month 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month What services are likeAs befits a religiously diverse community, the Sunday services draw upon many traditions. You are likely to hear poetry and other secular sources used as well as sacred writings from many of the world's religious traditions. Language used in the service is inclusive - avoiding bias against women and others and open to a wide range of beliefs - including those who do not believe in a traditional notion of God. Because of this inclusiveness, some might term the services 'spiritual but not religious.' The structure of the service reflects Unitarianism's Protestant history - there are hymns, readings, meditation/prayer, silent meditation, and an address or sermon. The worship leader will provide clear instructions inviting the congregation to stand, be seated, sing, and so on. The service begins with the lighting of the chalice - the unique symbol of Unitarianism. Later, members of the congregation are invited to light candles of joy and concern, sharing with words or in silence. Each service includes a time of silence of several minutes to allow each person to reflect, meditate, or pray as is most fitting to their needs and beliefs. Some examples of prayers that have been used in our services, which were all composed by our Minister, Reverend Andy Pakula. While our Sunday services vary from time to time, a typical order of service at New Unity Unitarian Congregation will generally be structured like this. |
