Why Membership?Everyone - whether a member or not - is welcome to participate in the programmes, Sunday services, and other activities of the Newington Green and Islington Unitarians. Those who participate regularly are also expected to contribute to help sustain the operation of the congregation. Given this, the concept of membership can seem a bit mystifying.More than anything else, membership is about something that we find more and more difficult in our customer-oriented culture: making a commitment to principles and people that we value. Practically, becoming a member means stating that you are in sympathy with the ethos of the congregation and committing to make at least a minimum contribution each year toward its support. There is no belief test for membership and no theological positions which members must agree with. One is simply asked to be in sympathy with the liberal ethos of the congregation and to support its life and work. Membership entitles a person to vote at congregational meetings, stand for election to committees and working groups and have a full say in the direction of congregational life. These are truly important privileges and responsibilities in this democratically run congregation, but they only just begin to describe the meaning of membership. Becoming a member means becoming a full participant in the life of the congregation. It means caring enough about this congregation and its purposes and principles that you are prepared to contribute your time and energy as you are able to its life and work. Most of all, membership means commitment - as wedding vows would have it - for better or for worse. When tough times come, 'friends' may seek green pastures. Members say “let’s work together to make this better”. Becoming a MemberNew members are recognised formally by the congregation at a special New Member Sunday service, which takes place near the beginning of each year. At this service, new members and the congregation at large pledge to strive to be in right relationship and to support one another on our individual spiritual journeys. If you are thinking about becoming a member, please get in touch with Rev. Andy. A membership pack (including an application form) is available to download from this page. Once submitted, your application will go before the governing committee for ratification. Membership is open to all, irrespective of the financial commitment one can make. All members pledge their financial support annually to renew their membership. The minimum annual pledge is £1. We wish for each person to decide on their pledge by examining their means, their values, and the importance of the congregation in their life. The tax year runs 6th - 5th April. To support the congregation fully in 2011, an average pledge of £400 is needed from each member. Not all members can afford this amount - others are willing and able to give more. At the heart of our community is this sort of generosity where we give what we are able and receive what we need. |
