About Visiting

You are welcome!

Visitors are always welcome at Sunday morning services and at any of the programmes. Sunday services are held at 11.00 AM at either Newington Green or Islington. Please see the Services page for details.

Attire

Members of the congregation dress for Sunday services - including casual, sporty, and business casual. (If you are wondering, the minister wears a suit rather than traditional clerical garb.)

What services are like

As a diverse community, the Sunday services draw upon many traditions. You are likely to hear poetry and other secular sources used as well as sacred writings from many of the world's religious traditions. Language used in the service is inclusive - avoiding bias against women and others and open to a wide range of beliefs. Because of the inclusiveness, some would term the services 'spiritual but not religious.'

The form of the service reflects Unitarianism's Protestant history - there are hymns, readings, meditation/prayer, silent meditation, and an address or sermon. (See a typical order of service.) The worship leader will provide clear instructions inviting the congregation to stand, be seated, sing, and so on.

The service begins with the lighting of the chalice - the symbol of Unitarianism. Later, members of the congregation are invited to light candles of joy and concern, sharing with words or in silence. Each service includes a time of silence of several minutes to allow each person to reflect, meditate, or pray as is most fitting for their needs and beliefs.

Children

There is a children's programme during services at Unity Church Islington (1st and 3rd Sundays of each month). On these Sundays, children come to the service opening and leave for their programme after a 'time for all ages.' (There is currently no children's programme at Newington Green.) Please see the Children's Programme page for more details. Of course, children are always welcome to remain with their parents in the service.

Fellowship

The congregation joins together for conversation, coffee and tea after the service.
