The Global Justice Discussion Group is a new monthly space at New Unity to make sense of events happening in our fast-changing world, share how we’re thinking and feeling about them, sit with the discomfort, and to ask what a values-led response might look like. Each month we'll take one issue as our focus and unpack the facts; share our emotional and moral reactions; and explore what personal, communal, and political responses are available to us. All perspectives that engage in good faith are welcome. No expertise required — only a willingness to show up, listen, and think together.
First meeting: The war in Iran
Since late February, the United States and Israel have been conducting strikes against Iran in what has become the most significant military escalation in the Middle East in decades. Iran has responded with strikes against Israel, Gulf states, and US military bases across the region — including attacks on UK facilities in Bahrain and Cyprus. A fragile ceasefire brokered by Pakistan came into effect on 8 April, but violations have already been reported on both sides. The scale of what's unfolding — the civilian casualties; the regional knock-on effects; the questions about international law, US foreign policy, and the UK's own entanglement — is genuinely hard to process.
We'll explore: What do we actually know — and what are we being told? What do we feel, as people of conscience? And what does justice require of us?
